Mandu fort is situated in the famous town of Mandu located in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh. Covering a distance of around 80 kilometers, Mandu Fort is known to be the largest fort in the country with its origin dating back to 6th century.

Resting along the Vindhyas at an altitude of over 2000 ft, Mandu with its natural defenses is famous for its forts and fine architecture. Once a celebrated place, Mandu is now a ruined city. It was an important city in history which saw the rise and fall of many dynasties. The city of Mandu encompasses some exquisite piece of architecture like Jahaz Mahal, Hindola Mahal, Jama Masjid, Hoshang Shah’s tomb and Mandu Fort along with many baolis or water wells. Each of the architecture in Mandu is a gem in itself. Some of then were even used as an inspiration to built the beautiful Taj Mahal centuries later.

Mandu Fort is a beautiful example of Afghan architecture. It contains ruins of pavilions, palaces, baths, ornamented canals, etc. The fort was once a retreat for Mughals during the monsoons. The esoteric beauty of the fort, in the midst of relaxing rich green panorama and the reddish-blue sunset sky, paints the vivid picture of the past epoch. The impression is completed by the huge tamarind, mango and banyan trees that stand tall surrounding the fort. Known as the “City of Joy” among the Malwa Sultans, the place is also popular for the love of poet-prince Baz Bahadur for his beautiful companion Rani Roopmati.

The fort which was built centuries ago still stands high in the sky with its crypts open to public viewing. A minimal entry charge needs to be paid at the entry after which you are free to explore the interiors at your own will. The best time to visit Mandu Fort is during the winters because during summers the temperature here shoots up to 40 degrees. The picturesque and serene environment becomes all the more astonishing during the rainy season. The fresh view of the greenery just after the rains give a soothing effect to the eyes.

The fort is located right in the heart of the city and is well connected to roads. One can take buses or autos to reach the place or can book rental car or cabs according to their own choices. You can go about exploring the fort from 10 a.m. in the morning to 4 p.m. in the evening after which it is closed for public. In order the explore the place fully, one has to spend around 3-4 hours in the fort.
