It can survive in any dry conditions. It needs around 600 to 650 mm rainfall. It can be successfully grown in summer climate. We can grow this dal in any type of soil. Loam and sandy Loam soil will be perfect for this crop. The pH range of the soil should be around 6 to 7.

  1. Palak – 1 bunch 
  2. Toor Dal – 1/2 cup 
  3. Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp 
  4. Oil – 1 tsp 
  5. Tamarind (Soaked) 
  6. Green chili – 2 nos 
  7. Onions – 2 nos chopped 
  8. Tomatoes – 2 nos chopped 
  9. Chili powder – 1 tsp 
  10. Salt only after pressure cooking 
  11. For Tempering : 
  12. Ghee – 1 tsp 
  13. Oil – 1 tsp 
  14. Urad Dal – 1 tsp 
  15. Chana Dal – 1 tsp 
  16. Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp 
  17. Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp 
  18. Asafetida powder – 1/2 tsp 
  19. Red chili – 2 nos 
  20. Pounded Garlic 
  21. Few Curry leaves 



  • In a pressure cooker add water, toor dal, turmeric powder, oil, palak, tamarind (soaked), green chilis, onions, tomatoes, chilli powder. Cook on a medium flame till the dal becomes soft. After it is cooked, add salt. 
  • In a pan, heat ghee and oil and sauté urad dal, chana dal, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, red chillis, pounded garlic and curry leaves. To this add the cooked dal palak mixture and mix well. Your dish is ready.
