 Nutmeg (Jaiphal) has a hot, spicy fragrance and taste and can be used in sweet and savory cooking. The tough brown seed from the Jaiphal tree has a hot, spicy sweet taste. Jaiphal has been used as a remedy for various ailments or to improve health in general. Jaiphal has strong antibacterial properties. It is effective in killing a number of cavity-causing bacteria in the mouth.

Jaiphal contains many plant-derived chemical compounds that are known to have been anti-oxidant, disease preventing, and health promoting properties. The spicy nut contains fixed oil trimyristin and many essential volatile oils such as which gives a sweet aromatic flavor to nutmeg such as myristicin, elemicin, eugenol and safrole. The other volatile-oils are pinene, camphene, dipentene, cineole, linalool, sabinene, safrole, terpeniol.
The active principles in nutmeg have many therapeutic applications in many traditional medicines as anti-fungal, anti-depressant, aphrodisiac, digestive, and carminative functions.

In Indian cuisine, Jaiphal is used in many sweet, as well as savoury, dishes (predominantly in Mughlai cuisine). In Kerala Malabar region, it is considered medicinal and the flesh made into juice, pickles and chutney, while the grated nutmeg is used in meat preparations and also sparingly added to desserts for the flavour. It is also added in small quantities as a medicine for infants. It may also be used in small quantities in garam masala.
